Q&A with Quintino Cianfaglione, honorary Italian consul of Connecticut

Quintino Cianfaglione came to the United States from Italy in 1967 like so many before him: to pursue the American dream.

Cianfaglione, 69, who became the first Italian honorary consul of Connecticut in November, cited a fulfilling American journey since stepping foot in Hartford 51 years ago.

After a degree in radio technology in Italy in 1965, his local career included working in radio and TV stations WEXT 1550 AM, WRYM/WRDM AM and WRDM TV in engineering, director and host roles, and founding Cannon Construction Ltd. in 1990.

He also was an interpreter for the state Supreme Court from 1984 to 1991; volunteered part time as a radio-television broadcasting teacher at the former South Catholic High School; was president of Comites of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey (a nonprofit that protects the rights of Italians living abroad); and active in other community works.

Among services the consulate offers at its 196 Trumbull St., Suite 305, location are assisting with renewing Italian passports, updating Italian citizens' information and assisting with alien card renewals. Connecticut has about 750,000 Italian-Americans, he said.

What's the biggest opportunity you face as honorary consul of Italy?

Helping Italians and Italian-Americans who can no longer travel to New York (for consulate services); providing documentation to help people remain legal; and promoting the Italian language.

What's the biggest challenge?

Financial, since our position is voluntary, which makes it difficult to reach out to those who cannot come to my office or go to New York.

Can the consulate play a role in helping Connecticut's economy?

I believe the consulate can help Connecticut's economy through commercial exchange (imports and exports). Opening and starting businesses in Connecticut would mean more jobs for locals. The consulate can also help Connecticut's economy by increasing student exchange.
